Mexoc 2016

An excellent all round display saw us to victory in our opening game against the much fancied Mexoc Barbarians at Sefton Park last night. The Mexoc Barbarians batted first and posted 134 from their 20 overs, a total that looked above par on a big pitch. Ste Nelson bowled particularly well before suffering a shoulder injury whilst dropping a catch. Michael Armstrong took 2 catches whilst deputising behind the stumps. So severe was the injury to Nelson’s shoulder that quick thinking interim skipper Armstrong, realising Nelson would be unable to bat, informed the opposition that a bit part player had turned up who “never scores at more than 1 a ball” and on that understanding Harthan was permitted to bat instead of Nelson. Tinkler got the Bar innings off to a fine start with Eastwood providing support from the non-strikers end. Tinks made 53 off 33 balls before retirement. Saad and Rob King continued the steady progress and it was looking fairly comfortable for the Bar. However, a middle order collapse saw Rob King (26) bowled, Ali Azhar depart first ball, and then not too long afterwards Saad (16) and Shaban (8) both departed on a double play dismissal. Harthan and Armstrong then came to the crease with the light fading and 32 required off 30 deliveries. Given Armstrong’s assurances as to the limitations of the substitute batsman Mexoc thought they were home and hosed. However in a gripping finale the substitute’s 20* off 15 proved decisive. Owing to the LMS scoring system’s inability to cope with substitutes the innings will forever be attributed to Steve Nelson.
